Planning a tropical holiday away from the bustle of everyday life often leads to booking an affordable vacation at one of the Caribbean’s easily accessible islands, located only a short distance from the shores of the United States. There is hope for travelers who have covered this region’s lovely – but tourist-filled – locales and want to try a different type of escape. Located at various points within the Indian Ocean, lesser-known, luxurious islands dot the region and wait to be discovered by vacationers who seek a journey to new, alluring tropical regions, without the fruit-based umbrella drinks and hordes of cruise ship passengers.
SECLUDED IN THE SEYCHELLES
Known for its nearly untouched natural beauty, the Seychelles archipelago is a favorite of royals and the wealthy. Located off the eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, this extraordinary destination comprises 115 islands that offer secluded beaches, natural wonders, incomparable hospitality and exciting entertainment.
This pristine natural paradise boasts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Home to the world’s largest seed – the coco-de-mer nut – Praslin’s Vallée de Mai Aldabra is a nature reserve where many species, such as the bronze gecko, blue pigeon, bulbul, sunbird, swiftlet, Seychelles skink, burrowing skink, tiger chameleons, day gecko, caecilian, and tree frog, reside within the protection of the forest. The Aldabra Atoll is known as the world’s largest raised coral atoll and while it is protected, limited visits are permitted, especially since tourism and culture minister, Alain St. Ange’s 2015 push to reveal the region’s ecological importance to visitors.
Described as the “...Seychelles’ true sanctuary...,” Fregate Island is home to luxurious accommodations and also serves as a conservation space, which protects an array of flora and fauna. Populations
of sea turtles, magpie robins and Aldabra giant
tortoises are rebounding from the verge of extinction with the help of the island’s resident staff of conservationists. Guests can choose to stay in three distinctive areas. The Private Pool Residences, which include a terrace, infinity pool and Jacuzzi, and
dining pavilion, overlook the sapphire-hued ocean. Banyan Hill Estate villas afford views of the harbor from a peninsula hilltop. With these accommodations, visitors enjoy a personal chef, butler, maid, veranda and private infinity pool. Though the aforementioned options would satisfy any demanding traveler, the most indulgent experience is Fregate Island’s option to rent the entire island, staffed with professionals to ensure every desire is fulfilled.
The culture of the Seychelles comprises a blending of African, Asian and European influences. Much
of the architecture reflects a history of French and British colonization. In the Seychelles, visitors can expect a creole cuisine of curries, chilies, ginger and garlic, which are rooted in French, Indian and Asian influences that complement local food resources, such as fish, octopus, coconut, papaya and apple. While active travelers can enjoy exploring the islands via boat and bus charters, horseback, and scuba diving, slower-paced guests will find excitement in the casino scene or simply taking in the respite found on the beach.
MAFIA ISLAND ESCAPE
As one of the more secluded and lesser-known destinations, Mafia Island affords time away from everyday life and everything. Located off the coast of Tanzania, this destination forms the Tanzanian Zanzibar Archipelago, which also includes Unguja, Pemba and Latham Island. Unlike the more popular, all-inclusive resorts of Mexico and the Caribbean, Mafia Island offers only a few lodging options and is proud of its reputation as a site of complete solitude.
Though Mafia Island is serene, visitors are able to engage in many activities throughout the area. While scuba diving and snorkeling can be found in many regions of the world, the waters surrounding Mafia Island are home to a large population of whale sharks. During September through March, these enormous – yet gentle – creatures can be found a short distance from land, near Kilindoni Harbour. Tours are also available to educate visitors regarding the Kua and Kisimani Mafia history. Kayaking, sailing trips, windsurfing and unwinding with
a beach picnic are all popular activities in this not-so-populated paradise.
At the Kinasi Lodge, guests enjoy a boutique- style hotel experience in the middle of a tropical beachfront setting. Accommodations reflect the
